From Guinea to Lyon: The Inspiring Journey of Mariama Cissé, an Engineering Student

On this page :

Mariama Cissé, originally from Guinea, is currently enrolled in a general engineering program at the CESI campus in Lyon. After completing her initial university studies in Conakry, she chose to pursue her education in France to further develop her skills and experience a new academic environment. She is now studying through a work-study program with Renault Trucks and also serves as a CESI ambassador. She reflects on her journey, the challenges she has faced, and the motivations that drive her.

An International Pathway : From Guinea to an Engineering Program in France

  • Can you briefly introduce yourself and tell us about your background?

My name is Mariama Cissé. I am originally from Guinea and I am currently a general engineering student at the CESI campus in Lyon, studying through a work-study program. Before coming to France, I studied for three years at Gamal Abdel Nasser University of Conakry, where I specialized in telecommunications. After that, I decided to pursue my studies internationally to further develop my skills and discover a new academic environment.

  • What motivated you to pursue your studies abroad?

Studying abroad was a valuable opportunity to broaden my horizons. I wanted to experience a different approach to learning and study in a new academic environment. I applied through Campus France and was admitted to study in France. The country is widely recognized for the quality of its higher education system, particularly in scientific and technical fields, which strongly influenced my decision.

  • How did you experience your arrival in France and your adaptation to a new academic system?

My arrival in France was both challenging and enriching, as it required a high level of adaptability. I had to adjust to a new academic system, new working methods, and a different culture. At first, it was not always easy, but with motivation, hard work, and the support of those around me, I gradually adapted.

Overcoming Challenges Through Perseverance and a Passion for Science

  • Did you encounter any difficulties during your journey? If so, how did you overcome them?

Yes, like many international students, I faced challenges, particularly in adapting to a new country and balancing academic demands with daily life. To overcome them, I remained perseverant, organized my work effectively, and, above all, maintained confidence in my abilities. These experiences helped me develop resilience and adaptability.

  • What led you to choose engineering studies?

I have long had a passion for science. I completed a scientific baccalaureate with a focus on mathematics. I have always been interested in understanding how technical systems work. Studying engineering allows me to analyze problems and develop practical solutions. It is a field that particularly motivates me, as it enables me to contribute to real-world projects and make a tangible impact in the industrial sector.

  • You are currently on a work-study placement with Renault Trucks. What does your role as an apprentice engineer in measurement systems involve?

I work on the instruments used during technical testing. In particular, I contribute to the verification and calibration of accelerometers to ensure the reliability of the data collected. I am also involved in equipment management and in organizing the measurement resources used by technical teams.

Engaging, Learning, and Encouraging Students to Study Abroad

  • Which skills from your studies do you use in your work-study program today?

I apply data analysis, scientific rigor, technical problem-solving, and teamwork. I also use organizational and project management skills, which are essential for working efficiently with different teams.

  • You are also a CESI ambassador. Why did you choose to get involved in student life?

I chose to take on this role because I enjoy sharing my experience with other students and supporting those interested in pursuing engineering. It is also a way for me to contribute to campus life and represent my school.

  • What message would you like to share with students who are considering studying abroad but are still hesitant?

I would encourage them not to hesitate to study abroad. It is an extremely enriching experience that fosters personal growth, cultural discovery, and the development of a wide range of skills. Although it can sometimes be challenging, the opportunities it offers make it a truly rewarding experience !
