Originally from Côte d’Ivoire, Mohamed Zidane reflects on his international journey and his experience at CESI. From his arrival in France to his professional integration as a data engineer, he shares the key stages of his development, the skills he acquired throughout his studies, and the strengths of a learning environment with a strong international focus.
Background and Choice of CESI
Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your background?
My name is Mohamed Zidane, and I am originally from Côte d’Ivoire. I joined CESI in 2023 as part of an exchange program. Before that, I was awarded a scholarship to study engineering in Tunisia, where I specialized in data science.
Following strong academic results, I had the opportunity to join CESI in Rouen, where I entered the engineering program in my final year. I then pursued a Specialized Master’s degree in Information Systems Security. Today, I work as a Data Engineer at La Forge Normandy.
What was your background before CESI?
Before coming to France, I had already gained several professional experiences. I worked in Côte d’Ivoire and also as a freelancer with companies based in various countries, including Nigeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Canada.
This international experience helped me develop strong technical skills and a high level of adaptability. After joining CESI, I completed a final-year internship at Koaloo.Fi in Paris, followed by a one-and-a-half-year work-study program, before moving into my current role.
Why did you choose CESI?
I had several opportunities, including programs in Paris, Nancy, and CESI Rouen. I chose CESI because the program perfectly matched my profile in data science. It also included components in cybersecurity and management, which complemented my academic background and career ambitions. This comprehensive approach was a key factor in my decision.
How was your arrival in France?
My arrival went very smoothly. I had already lived independently in Tunisia, which helped me adapt quickly. I had also spoken French since childhood, which made integration easier.
I was also very well supported by the CESI teams, particularly by Sabine Frefield, International Admissions Officer, and Mohamad El Falou, Program Director, which greatly helped me from the moment I arrived.
What were the main challenges?
The main challenge was adapting to the teaching methodology. At CESI, learning is highly autonomous and based on group projects.
Unlike traditional education systems, students must learn to work without direct supervision, conduct independent research, and know when to ask for help. At first, this can be challenging, but over time, this approach becomes highly rewarding and formative.
Experience at CESI and Skills Development
What helped you succeed?
Several factors contributed to my success: peer support among students, CESI’s active learning pedagogy, and a stimulating learning environment. Working on hands-on projects also played a key role in my progress, along with developing autonomy and adaptability.
Do you have a memorable moment from your studies?
One memorable experience was a hackathon in Rouen with high school students. We supported them in developing an innovative project focused on the digitalization of railway transportation.
We helped them structure their ideas and prepare their final presentation. This experience was very rewarding, especially thanks to the collaboration and teamwork involved. Seeing their engagement was particularly motivating.
Career Impact and Insights
What impact has CESI had on your career?
CESI had a major impact on my career path. Beyond the degree, the program helped me develop essential skills, particularly in public speaking and self-presentation. I was not very comfortable speaking in public before. Today, these skills help me present myself more effectively in interviews and in my professional life, which was key to securing my current position.
Has your international experience been an asset?
Yes, absolutely. Working with teams from different countries helped me adapt to various environments and improve my English. It also taught me how to communicate more effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Today, I work in an international environment, which makes my daily work especially enriching.
What are you most proud of today, and what advice would you give to future students?
I am proud to have secured a position with a high level of responsibility. I had several opportunities, which allowed me to choose a role beyond a standard entry-level position. This recognition of my skills is a great source of satisfaction.
I would encourage international students not to hesitate and to seize the opportunity. CESI offers an innovative teaching approach, strong support, and a solid professional network.
It is an experience truly worth pursuing, both academically and professionally.
